DO SWIMMERS WEAR UNDERWEAR UNDER SWIMSUITS? AND WHY YOU NEVER SHOULD

It may seem simple, but many people are curious if they should wear their swim trunks or one-piece swimsuit under their underwear. I am a swimmer, coach and beachgoer who can help you determine if you should wear underwear while swimming.

Should you wear your swimsuit under your underwear? You don’t have to wear bras or panties if it is a one-piece swimsuit. You shouldn’t wear any underwear if you are wearing swim trunks, shorts, or briefs.

Many people might be curious to learn why it is not a good idea to wear bikini swimsuits. It is too obvious and uncomfortable, so why not add more cover? You are probably more covered than you realize. We have more information about the way that swimsuits can be worn as both outerwear and underwear.

SWIMSUITS Vs UNDERWEAR: USE IN WATER & TRANSPARENCY

Swimsuits made from certain materials are water-resistant and can withstand chlorine. They also absorb less water and dry faster.

Non-pool water-appropriate undergarments are usually made of less durable materials like cotton and can easily be damaged by pool water. Regular underwear can absorb significant amounts of water. This increases drag and makes it more difficult to swim. Additional water retention can also prolong the drying time.

Swimsuits can be worn without the need to wear underwear. Swimsuits for women usually have extra padding around the bust and crotch. These are used to make the swimsuit more comfortable, and to hide one’s private parts.

Check for lining by turning your swimsuit inside out. You will find a second layer of fabric under the main layer. It is typically white but it can be any color. You can easily separate the second layer of material by using your fingers.

For additional support, some recreational swimwear tops can be fitted with an underwire. Some advanced swimsuits are not designed for competitive athletes and do not have any padding around the bust. They are made from thicker material which prevents any accidental transparency.

Pro Tip: Avoid suits without lining or those that are pink/yellow if you want your swimsuit to be see-through. When you get the chance to try on the suit, make sure you apply water to the areas that are most sensitive to see-through.

Men’s shorts and swim trunks are usually made with extra padding and/or lining in the crotch. This acts as an alternative to underwear. The lining is usually a thin mesh material with tiny holes. With technological advancements, there are now more swim shorts and trunks that don’t have a lining.

Underwear is not necessary to be worn under speedos (swim shorts). However, speedos can still be seen through.

Pro Tip: When you’re at the store, make sure you stretch the suit material without lining to see if it can be seen through. Although it is rare for men’s swimsuits to be see-through, there are still risks and nobody wants to witness a wardrobe malfunction. To be sure, you can also search for swimsuit reviews on Google.

SHOULD I WEAR UNDERWEAR BELOW MY SWIMSUIT ANYTIME?

Yes, in rare cases. If your swimsuit is not strong enough, you might consider wearing a bra underneath. In most cases, if your swimsuit doesn’t have a lining, you can wear briefs or boxers instead of going commando. For additional comfort, females can wear panties and board shorts.

Others may simply be afraid of their swim bottoms falling down. Others may need extra support or compression. These are valid reasons to wear underneathwear. You can eliminate most of these problems by choosing a swimsuit that is better.

WHAT IF I WANT TO WEAR UNDERWEAR AS a SWIMSUIT? What about a T-SHIRT

The short answer is that it all depends. It is generally not recommended. Many swimming pools have a policy regarding swimwear. Most pools require that you wear a swimsuit, and they prohibit the wearing of underwear or street clothes.

These policies are mostly in place for safety reasons. Swimmers can get sickened by waterborne diseases from clothes worn outdoors.

Also, clothing can transfer dirt and particles to the pool. This can cause a disruption in the chemical balance. The pool contains chemicals that act as disinfectants and fight germs. It is therefore important to keep any dirt or clothing from the pool.

These rules are necessary to ensure swimmers have consistent coverage and avoid unhappy customers. Underwear that doesn’t have a string tightening it is more likely not to slip off your body when swimming. After getting wet, underwear can become transparent.

On the other hand, beaches are a place where you can wear anything you like. Although I have seen beaches with swimwear regulations, these are rare.

Pro Tip: You can use a sports bra with nylon panties if you forget your swimsuit. Some men have worn tight nylon underwear from women to pass as speedos. This can be embarrassing for some men. Remember that underwear can see through if it gets wet.

CAN A SWIMSUIT BE WEARED AS AN UNDERGARMENT

A swimsuit can be worn as underwear but it is not recommended. Swimmingsuits can cause skin irritation and make you uncomfortable over time. The best underwear is designed for long wear. It is made from comfortable, breathable and moisture-absorbent fabrics that are soft to the touch. Underwear will last longer than a swimsuit and is also cheaper.
