Career Advancement Considerations

Career Advancement Considerations

For a career-minded person, nothing is more frustrating than not being able to advance. You may hit the limit of your qualifications, or there may be current incumbents who aren’t going to move anytime soon.  You may also find the structure of your current company simply won’t allow you to progress any further.

Improve Your Qualifications

The first issue can be dealt with by improving your qualifications.  Take online classes to improve your knowledge and training.  Develop new skill sets.  Get a degree.  Keep abreast of the latest happenings in your field.

Look For Ways Around The Road Block

The second issue is not so easy to deal with because ultimately you can’t control what someone else does and doesn’t do.  If they are content where they are there’s not much you can do about it.  Perhaps you can persuade the company to create a new position for you that will take you around the roadblock. Alternatively, you may have to consider changing jobs and moving to a company where the pathways to advancement are more open and accessible.

Change Jobs

The third issue will definitely require a change of jobs, or a downsizing of your career plans. Whilst it’s certainly not easy to uproot your life in pursuit of a better job, sometimes it’s necessary if you’ve gone as far as you can with your current company.

Sometimes you do need to consider moving to where you’ll earn more or move further along in your career.  In fact, many people find that when it comes to career advancement, they usually do have to consider relocating at some point.

Where To Relocate To?

Sometimes this decision is easy.  Often it’s not, and requires some research and consideration. Factors like supply and demand for example can affect your hours and rate, and where you move to. If there is a shortage of people with your skills in a particular area, relocating there could mean a boost in both your earnings and your career prospects.

Be willing to take the necessary steps to get where you want to go.  If you do, you will have a better chance of succeeding.  It is very important though that you do your research and that you also talk about your plans with others. You may think that moving is right for you, but once you talk to someone you may realize that it is just not for you.

You may also vacillate between wanting to move and feeling that you simply can’t move for personal reasons. In fact, your mind will likely come up with a lot of reasons for not moving. Again, talking to family and friends may provide some guidance for you.

Taking A Sideways Step Instead Of Relocating

Of course, this may mean that you’ll need to take a sideways step into a related job field, which may lead to further training and certification requirements.  If you work in healthcare, it may for instance mean that you need to obtain First Aid or ACLS certifications for your new role.  If this is the case, Google AHA ACLS training center near me for a list of places offering the training.
